SUMMARY:Training Event at Burmaster Park (Bond Lake)
DESCRIPTION:A training event at Burmaster Park. \nBeginner and Intermediate courses available\, with small group training provided by experienced instructors.\n\nCheck-in for the Beginner option at 10:45am\, with the instructional session beginning at 11:00am. Check-in for the Intermediate option at 11:45am with the instructional session beginning at 12:00pm. The check-in location for both options is at the park shelter building on the southeastern side of Bond Lake (south of Lower Mountain Road.) After the instructional session\, complete the Beginner or Intermediate course on your own or in small groups.\n\nOnline pre-registration is strongly encouraged and is the only way to guarantee we will have a map for you. (We will also print a few maps for “day-of” registrations.) The registration deadline is Thursday\, May 16th at 11:00pm. The fee to participate is $5 for members of any orienteering club or $10 for non-members. Juniors (20 and under) who are part of a BFLO family membership\, participate for free\, otherwise $5. Children (11 and under) participate for free but must be registered by their parent. (Your age is considered to be the age you will be on December 31st this year.)

SUMMARY:Course Design Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is for anyone interested in learning how to design an orienteering course and/or use the Purple Pen software.  See all the details below and be sure to register if you are interested. The workshop is open to club members.  Information on joining the club can be found here. \n9:45 Arrive\n10:00 – 11:15 Part One: Principles of Course Design\n11:15 – 11:30 Break\n11:30 – 12:45 Part Two: Using Purple Pen to Layout Courses on the Map \nParticipants may sign up for Part One or Part Two or both. For Part Two\, they will need a laptop with Purple Pen loaded. Instructions will be provided for this. \nWorkshop limited to 12 participants. Register by email to davidcady@gmail.com. Registration deadline is Wednesday April 3 at 9 PM. For questions call 716-322-8049. \nPart One: Principles of Course Design. We will examine the color coded courses adopted by OUSA and discuss the requirements and characteristics of each. We will look at courses from actual events and analyze how well they meet the criteria. Finally\, we will practice drawing our own courses on club maps. \nPart Two: Using Purple Pen. This software is widely used for designing courses and placing the course symbols on maps in preparation for printing. We will practice setting courses in order to get familiar with the capabilities of the software. Participants must bring their own laptops with Purple Pen already loaded. Upon registration\, instructions will be sent on how to do this. The club has two laptops which may be borrowed. If you wish to borrow one of these laptops\, indicate this when registering.

SUMMARY:Intermediate Training at Sprague Brook Park : Pre-registration required
DESCRIPTION:The intermediate training session on Saturday\, September 22\, 2018 will concentrate on teaching those skills that are necessary to progress from the Yellow to the Orange Course and beyond. These skills include pace counting\, compass bearings\, attack points\, using handrails and catching features\, contour interpretation\, and map simplification. \nThe session will be held from 10 AM to 1 PM at Sprague Brook Park. Follow signs from the park entrance to the meeting place. The session is free but participants must be members of BFLO. Registration will be limited so email Dave Cady to register.
