SUMMARY:Chestnut Ridge Learn and Practice
DESCRIPTION:Join us on August 7th to learn orienteering! \nHave you been wishing you knew how to do orienteering?  We have the perfect event for you.  Come learn how to do orienteering with us in August. \nWe are offering a special Learn & Practice session at Chestnut Ridge Park on Thursday\, August 7\, 2025.  Registration is free for Buffalo Orienteering Club members and $5.00 for non-members.  This event will be limited to 30 participants to be sure that each person can fully benefit from the instruction.  All participants should register online\, including club members; limited on-site registration will be dependent on availability.  Registered participants should arrive between 5:00 pm and 5:30 pm\, with the event beginning at 5:30 pm. \nEnter the park and drive by the Casino toward shelter #8.  (We will have signs starting at the Casino.) Cross over the bridge after passing shelter 8 and look for the Orienteering signs on your right. The start is located at coordinates 42°43’00.9″N\, 78°44’24.6″W.  Here is a link to a Google Map. \n Details \n Procedures: When you arrive\, volunteers will check your name on the list and assign you to a group for the instruction.  Instruction will begin at 5:30.  We will be using the 6-control permanent course for this Learn and Practice.  The instructor will introduce you to orienteering maps and symbols and to a very rudimentary explanation of the compass.  Then the instructor will walk with the group to the first two controls\, giving guidance along the way.  The instructor will then let the individuals in the group navigate to the last four controls on their own.  Participants can find these controls as individuals or in a group. \n Equipment:  Wear weather-appropriate clothing that is suitable for hiking.  While participants do not need to bring anything to the event\, a base-plate compass would be helpful because the club has very few to loan out.  The map for the event will be given to participants when they sign in. \nThis is a great opportunity to learn how to read an orienteering map and navigate through a course.  Come out and see what you can do! \n

SUMMARY:Chestnut Ridge Solo Event
DESCRIPTION: More details for the 2025 event will be updated as this event approaches. \n2025 Chestnut Ridge Park – Solo Orienteering Event for club members only \nLong and short courses available for solo orienteering from Friday\, April 4\, 2025 \nMembers will receive an email on April 4\, 2025 with links to the maps. \nCourse notes:\nPark vehicles just south of the Park Road overpass on the west side of Chestnut Ridge Road. The start and finish points for the courses are on a white tag at the end of the fence at the NE end of the small parking area. \nControls are flagged\, but the flags spots are close to the ground or situated to avoid easy detection from a trail or road. The woods are fairly open\, but there are plenty of tree blow-down in some areas. \nThe courses can be completed in order as marked on the maps or\, if wanted\, feel free to search for controls in any order. Have fun and be safe. \nIt’s a good idea to bring water to the park and a cell phone. Make sure others know your plan for the day\, and don’t take unnecessary risks.

SUMMARY:Chestnut Ridge Learn and Practice
DESCRIPTION:Join us on August 28th to learn orienteering! \nHave you been wishing you knew how to do orienteering?  We have the perfect event for you.  Come learn how to do orienteering with us in August. \nWe are offering a special Learn & Practice session at Chestnut Ridge Park on Wednesday\, August 28\, 2024. Registration is free for Buffalo Orienteering Club members and $5.00 for non-members.  All participants must register online\, including club members.  This event will be limited to 30 participants to be sure that each person can fully benefit from the instruction. Registered participants should arrive been 5:30 pm and 6:00 pm\, with the event beginning at 6:00 pm. \nEnter the park and drive by the Casino toward shelter #8. (We will have signs starting at the Casino.) Cross over the bridge after passing shelter 8 and look for the Orienteering Event signs on your right. The start is located at coordinates 42°43’00.9″N\, 78°44’24.6″W. The google map link is https://goo.gl/maps/SNhUbgqCbaBrud7w5. \nDetails \nProcedures: When you arrive\, volunteers will check your name on the list and assign you to a group for the instruction. Instruction will begin at 6:00. We will be using a 6-control permanent course for this Learn and Practice. The instructor will introduce you to orienteering maps and symbols and to a very rudimentary explanation of the compass. Then the instructor will walk with the group to the first two controls\, giving guidance along the way. Then the instructor will let the individuals in the group navigate to the last four controls on their own. Participants can find these controls as individuals or in a group. \nEquipment: Wear weather-appropriate clothing that is suitable for hiking. While participants do not need to bring anything to the event\, a base-plate compass would be helpful because the club has very few to loan out. The map for the event will be handed to participants when they sign in. \nThis is a great opportunity to learn how to read an orienteering map and navigate through a course.  Come out and see what you can do!

SUMMARY:Chestnut Ridge Solo Event
DESCRIPTION:2024 Chestnut Ridge Park – Solo Orienteering Event \nLong and short courses available for solo orienteering from Friday\, April 12\, 2024 through Sunday\, April 21\, 2024. \nPrint out the long course map or the short course map and complete anytime during the days that orienteering flags will be up in the park.

SUMMARY:US Masters Championship-Sprague Brook
DESCRIPTION:U.S Masters Championships – Day 1 – Sprague Brook Park \nSprague Brook Park\, 9674 Foote Rd\, Glenwood\, NY \nBFLO is organizing the first day of this two day championship event. We hope you will consider volunteering to help us put on this large event. Over 250 competitive orienteers from the U.S and Canada are expected to attend. However\, this event is not just for competitive orienteers. \nIn addition to the competitive categories based on age and sex\, three recreational courses will be offered. Those courses are a white (beginner) course that is 1.8 km long\, a yellow (advanced beginner) course that is 2.7 km long and an orange (intermediate) course that is 4.1 km long. The recreational courses operate very much like the courses we have at our local events throughout the year. They are reasonably priced ($10 registration fee)\, they are low-key\, you can start whenever you are ready\, the results are grouped by the course\, and we don’t pass out any awards. For these recreational courses you won’t get your map ahead of time. You will get it at the start area just before you start. Like at our regular club events\, we encourage you to register online to guarantee that you will get a map. Note: Recreational participants will register between 11:00 am and 11:30 am\, which is different from the competitive participants.  If you are looking for a “local” event in September\, sign up for a recreational course at this event by registering here.\n \nMany volunteer positions are such that it will also be possible to participate on either a recreational or competitive course. Refunds on entry fees will be available to volunteers whose assignment enables them to participate. \nEntry fees will differ from what we usually charge at a local event. Other arrangements will differ as well. \nFull information can be found on the event website: www.ousamasters2023.com. \nContact the Event Director\, David Cady\, at 716-837-3737\, or davidcady@gmail.com\, if you have any questions or would like to volunteer.
