The Ellicottville Adventure Run: August 26, 2023

The Buffalo Orienteering Club invites you to the Ellicottville Adventure Run & Hike. Participants will use very detailed maps to find as many as 40 orange and white triangular flags placed on, off and way off forest trails in the 6,000-acre Rock City and McCarty Hill State Forests, located between Salamanca and Ellicottville, NY.  When registering, participants choose a 3-hour or 6-hour time limit and whether they will go individually or as members of a group. It’s a great format for both hardcore competitors and casual family hiking. Afterwards, the picturesque Village of Ellicottville is ready to greet you with hotels, restaurants, shops, and, yes, more than a few drinking establishments with live music.

Map
Our maps are drawn to international orienteering standards at a scale of 1:10,000 with a detailed Little Rock City inset at 1:4,000, all with contour intervals of 5 meters. There will be two maps that can be laid flat for route planning, then bagged back-to-back for the event. They were completed in the summers of 2012 and 2016 by Valentine Vladimirov of Bulgaria. Small portions of the maps were used for this event from 2012 to 2016 and major portions were used in 2017, 2019 and 2021-2022. Copies of the competition maps will not be available before the event, but the WNY Mountain Biking Association does sell a more generalized map of the area featuring the bike trails at a scale of 1:20,000 with a contour interval of 20 feet. To obtain a copy of that map, contact the Western New York Mountain Bike Association here. All participants will receive their maps at check-in. Participants may start at a time of their choosing (prior to our stated deadlines) with the starter’s permission. The starter will ensure that all start times are a minimum of 2 minutes apart.   All  participants must start by 11:00am.
